When you picture Malawi, chances are Lake Malawi comes to mind — a glittering freshwater lake that stretches the length of the country, with golden beaches, friendly villages, and sunsets that will stop you in your tracks.

This Tourism Month, we’re celebrating the best of the lake by sharing some of our favourite places to stay. Whether you’re after barefoot island bliss, an intimate beach hideaway, or a lively resort with all the trimmings, these lodges have you covered.

Blue Zebra Lodge
View of Blue Zebra Lodge from the lake

Tucked away on Nankoma Island in the Marelli Archipelago, Blue Zebra is as much an island escape as a lakeside lodge. Inside Lake Malawi National Park, it is the perfect combination of adventure and relaxation.

  • Stay: Tented chalets, executive chalets and larger cottages — all with en-suite and lovely lake views.

  • Do: Snorkelling and kayaking around the island, nature walks to the peak of the island, bird-watching, sunset cruises, or simply lounging by the infinity pool.

Only a 20-minute boat ride from Senga Bay, it is an idyllic retreat surrounded by nature.

Makuzi Beach Lodge
Makuzi Beach Lodge Chalet

Located on the northern shores of the lake, Makuzi is for guests who want a bit more remoteness without sacrificing comfort.

  • Stay: catering to all desires, there are chalets, cottages and a camp site.

  • Do: Snorkelling and kayaking in the clear waters, bird-watching, beach yoga, fishing and cultural beach walks.

Because it’s tucked away in a private bay, guests get to feel like the lakeside is theirs to claim.

Chembe Eagles Nest
The beach at Chembe

In Cape Maclear, Chembe is a small lodge that feels like a hidden gem with its own private beach.

  • Stay: Double chalets, all en-suite and lake-facing with verandas or a campsite with spectacular views of the hills.

  • Do: Diving, beach BBQs, island hopping and sailing.

It’s perfect for travellers who want the chance to dip into local flavors and traditions by day and sunset views by night.

Sunbird Livingstonia
The Namalenje Restaurant Sunbird Livingstonia

Situated on Senga Bay only 2 hours from Lilongwe, this long-standing favourite offers classic lakeside charm.

  • Stay: Standard and deluxe rooms with ensuites and air-conditioning.

  • Do: The large pool, open-air terrace restaurant and gardens.

It’s a well-run resort which still maintains the lakeside calm.

Makokola Resort

Down in southern Lake Malawi, near Mangochi, Makokola is a family-run resort that maintains a strong sense of place and comfort.

  • Stay: Thatched, spacious villas, beach rooms and one large villa.

  • Do: Water sports (sailing, motor-boating, kayaking), spa, walking, golf and relaxing by the pool or beach.

Its size, range of rooms and full service make Makokola a top choice for many travellers.

Why We Love Lake Malawi

  • The Variety: From rustic island retreats to full-service resorts, there’s a spot for everyone.

  • The Experiences: Snorkelling, kayaking, cultural encounters, or just lazy beach days.
